Monkey: Journey to the West

Asian audiences, particularly the Chinese, seem to have developed a taste for western performing arts.

A case in point is Monkey: Journey to the West, a vibrant and visually sumptuous production featured at the Lincoln Center Festival.

Other examples of how the performing arts has attracted Asian audiences is the Chinese New Year gala concert of cellist Jian Wang, and productions by the Shen Yun Performing Arts, a Chinese dance company based in New York.

Meantime, the `Monkey’ director has revived the Noh play Matsukaze, which is about a couple of ghost sisters.

The question is, are Asian audiences ready for more serious stuff or truly great cultural performances?
